Biography

2012: Went 3-4 with a 4.86 ERA and two complete games in 14 appearances ... Struck out 35 batters in 66-2/3 innings pitched ...
Pitched 6-1/3 innings of relief at Wake Forest (2/22) to earn first win as a Panther ... Was outstanding in his first-ever start, throwing 7-2/3 innings against Mercer (3/3), allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts but did not get the decision ... Threw a complete-game shutout against Manhattan (3/10) and earned Big South Pitcher of the Week honors ... Allowed just two hits while striking out a career-high eight batters in the win ... Earned second Big South Pitcher of the Week honor for throwing a second complete-game shutout against VMI (3/31) ... Retired final 16 batters of the game, striking out four without issuing a walk.

Before HPU: Spent two seasons at Louisburg ... Went 7-3 in 14 appearances in 2011 ... Posted a 3.53 ERA in 64-1/3 innings, striking out 60 while walking just 10 ... During freshman season he had a 5-0 record with a 2.07 ERA and 36 strikeouts.

Prep: As a junior at Menchville High School he posted a 0.98 ERA in nine games and was a First Team All-Region selection as an outfielder ... Second Team All-Region selection as a sophomore ... Also a 2009 Louisville Slugger High School All-American honoree.

Personal: Criminal Justice major ... Son of Douglas and Lori Armstead ... Has a brother, Demonte and a sister, Ashley ...  Born Matthew Douglas Armstead on June 21, 1991 in Newport News, Va.
