The High Point University women's basketball team weathered a late run by Campbell University to pick up a 77-65 win over the Camels in Big South action at the Millis Center on Saturday afternoon. Senior Shamia Brown led HPU with 25 points in the game, including 18 in the first half.

“I was really proud of our performance today,” head coach Jennifer Hoover said. “Campbell is a well-coached team that plays very hard. I was really pleased that we were able to dictate the pace early and get out to a lead. Our defensive effort and intensity was very good and in the second half we really focused on rebounding and made up what we lacked in the first half on the boards.”

Brown shot 12-17 from the floor in the contest, crossing the 20-point threshold for the third time this season. The senior also grabbed five rebounds, had two blocks, two steals and one assist. The senior now needs just 22 points to tie the HPU Div. I career-scoring record on 1,330 point set by Jurica Hargraves last season.

Junior Erin Reynolds and sophomore Cheyenne Parker also scored in double figures for the Panthers. Reynolds finished with 16 points to go along with six assists and Parker notched her 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Tayler Tremblay led HPU with eight assists in the game, one shy of her career high.

Jazmine Cooper and Tonisha Baker each finished in double-digits for Campbell with Cooper scoring 17 to go along with 11 rebounds and Baker notching 16.

The win improves High Point's record to 10-6 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Big South. The 5-0 start is HPU's best in conference play since the 2005-06 season when the Panthers won their first seven Big South contests. Campbell falls to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big South with the loss.

The two teams traded baskets early in the game until a basket down low by Brown started a 9-0 run which put the Panthers up 20-13 and forced a Campbell timeout. Brown scored twice with shots from the paint and Reynolds converted an old-fashioned three-point play to account for seven of the nine points.

Campbell pulled back into the game out of the timeout and trailed by just three, 24-21, with 8:47 remaining the half before a three from the corner by Laura Whitt on a fast break doubled the HPU advantage. The basket spurred a 12-2 run by the Panthers, making the score 36-23 with just under four minutes left in the first half.

HPU pushed its lead to 14 at 40-26 with a minute left in the half before ultimately going into the locker room up 12, 42-30. High Point forced 10 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, converting them into 12 points. Brown led all scorers in the half with 18 points on 9-13 shooting.

High Point continued to build its lead in the second half going up by as much as 18, 63-45, on a layup and free throw by Brown with 7:46 remaining. Reynolds combined with Whitt and redshirt-freshman Lindsay Puckett to score 12 of the Panthers first 21 points in the half.

Campbell began to pull itself back into the game following Brown's three-point play, using a 12-1 run to close to within seven with four minutes left. Baker connected on a trey from the right elbow to start the run and scored five of the 12 while Cooper scored six points down low including four on second-chance buckets.

Parker and Reynolds combined to snuff out the Camel comeback as Parker hit a layup while being fouled and then converted the resulting free throw and Reynolds connected on two-straight from behind the arc to push the HPU lead back to 12, 73-61, with 1:55 remaining.

The High Point defense had 10 steals and forced 17 Campbell turnovers in the game, converting them into 17 points at the other end. The Panthers finished with a 14-0 edge in fast break points.

HPU will return to action in one week when the Panthers continue their three-game home stand against Coastal Carolina on Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. Coastal is currently 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the Big South. High Point swept the season series with the Chanticleers last season, winning 80-66 at home and 62-48 on the road.
