The High Point University men's cross country team competed in the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, placing 30th in the national-class field at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Sophomore Patrick Crawford led HPU with a 63rd-place finish.

"This was an eye-opener for our guys and we won't take it lightly," said HPU head coach Mike Esposito. "We will keep with our consistent training and get better over the next few weeks heading into the Big South Championship."

The University of Oklahoma dominated the race, scoring just 34 points with the No. 2, 3, 4 and 7 finishers. Georgetown placed second with 143 points and Columbia took third with 143. The Panthers placed 30th with 909. The only other Big South school in the race was Winthrop, which placed 45th. UNC Greensboro's Paul Chelimo won the individual title.

Crawford led HPU for the second race in a row with his 63rd-place finish and a time of 25:18. Junior Jacob Smith was the Panthers' second finisher in 210th with a time of 26:10 and freshman Reece Ayers was HPU's No. 3 runner in 234th with a time of 26:21.

Junior Dakota Peachee placed 254th with a time of 26:33 and senior Neal Darmody placed 264th with a time of 26:37 to finish out HPU's top five.

Next up for HPU is the Blue Ridge Open at Appalachian State on Oct. 14 in Boone, N.C. That will be HPU's final test before the Big South Championship on Oct. 29 in Conway, S.C.
