Courtney Johnk had a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs and
Michelle Chakirelis hit .438 in the High Point University volleyball team's 3-0 loss to Campbell Friday in the Big South Conference opener. The Camels pulled out the 3-0 (24-26, 23-25, 20-25) win at the Millis Center in their first league match since rejoining the Big South.
HPU led early in every set but Campbell was able to pull out the sweep led by Annie Kobeski with 12 kills. The Panthers had more kills, digs and assists than the Camels but couldn't hold on to early leads.
Chakirelis hit .438 with eight kills and two blocks in the loss and
Kristin Heldt had 10 kills.
Breanna Holliday recorded 16 digs and
Chelsea Davis added eight kills and 13 digs.
“We had stretches of good, high-level volleyball,” said head coach
Jason Oliver. “And we had stretches where we struggled. Campbell put pressure on us from the service line and we didn't have an answer. To win in the Big South we have got to be more consistent and earn victories. When we fight we can compete with anyone in the league but we need to keep that fight for an entire match.”
High Point outhit the Camels .213 to .122 in the first set but Campbell came away with a 26-24 win. The set was tied 24-24 when Heldt was blocked by Kobeski and Lorin Thomas. A service ace from Mallorie Cubillo gave set one to Campbell.
The Panthers led as late as 21-20 on the second set before Campbell rallied for the win. Jordan Reaves had a kill to tie the frame and Chelsey Pachoud's kill put the Camels ahead 22-21. HPU stayed in the set, knotting the score again 23-23 on a kill by Davis. A Campbell kill and an HPU attack error put the Camels ahead in the match 2-0.
In the final set HPU once again led early, jumping out to an 8-4 lead. The Camels took a 17-16 lead on a kill by Thomas and held it for the rest of the match, going on to win the final set 25-20.
The Panthers return to the Millis Center Saturday to face Norfolk State at 1:30 p.m. and Maryland-Eastern Shore at 7 p.m.
