The High Point University volleyball team wrapped up action at the Hokie Tournament in Blacksburg, Va. with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-17) loss to Cleveland State on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum. Senior
Breanna Holliday had 14 digs in the loss, her third double-digit dig performance of the weekend to earn All-Tournament honors.
"Cleveland State was just little more consistent tonight and it made the difference," said head coach
Jason Oliver. "They had a couple players that hurt us all night. It was hard for a team as young as ours to make the adjustments mid-match that we needed to make. We continue to play with a tremendous amount of heart and when we add focus and adjustment making to that we will be winning matches. Congratulations to Breanna who held us down on defense all weekend had a great opening weekend to her senior year. I can't tell you how many coaches came up to me this weekend and said we played great defense and had a ton of determination."
Holliday followed up back-to-back career-high 20 dig performances with 14 digs and two assists in the loss to CSU. Freshman
Kristin Heldt had a team-high 11 kills on 20 swings for a .350 attack percentage.
Courtney Johnk added eight kills and one block while freshman
Chelsea Davis had seven kills and six digs.
High Point and Cleveland State battled through the first set with the Vikings pulling out a 25-19 win. HPU led early in the set with CSU taking over 8-7. The Vikings never relinquished that lead although the Panthers stayed within four until the final two points. Both teams put down 13 kills in the frames but errors hurt HPU as the Panthers committed seven while CSU only made four.
The Panthers were able to cut down on their attack errors in the second set, committing only three with 10 kills for a .206 attack percentage but the Vikings stayed a step ahead with a .227 hitting percentage and a 25-21 win. CSU led 19-14 late in the set forcing a HPU timeout. The Panthers rallied after the break, cutting the lead to one, 19-18, on a kill by Johnk, a solo block by
Caity Farus and two Cleveland State errors. The Vikings took control back on a kill by Megan Barhorst and went on the win the set 25-21. Heldt and Johnk had four kills each in the set.
HPU put up a fight in the third set as well, tying the score as late as 15-15 before Cleveland State pulled away with the win. Marie Frease gave CSU the lead with a kill and the Vikings went on to win the set 25-17.
The Panthers (0-3) travel to George Mason next weekend for the Patriot Invitational. HPU will play UNC Greensboro and Navy on Saturday and George Mason on Sunday.
