BOX SCORE
The High Point University women's soccer team played Gardner-Webb to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on Saturday night in Boiling Springs, N.C. Sophomores
Becca Hemby and
Kelli Joline each finished with a goal and assist on the night.
“We are disappointed we didn't walk away with the win,” head coach
Marty Beall. “I thought we were absolutely fantastic in the first half in every facet of the game. We created a lot of good chances and did not allow almost anything. The start of the second half was even more impressive. Unfortunately we didn't do the things that make us successful in the final 20 minutes and were punished. We have to learn to never fall asleep. Every team in this conference will punish you for your mistakes.”
The Panthers move to 4-8-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Big South after the draw. Gardner-Webb is now 2-5-5 overall and 0-2-2 in the Big South. The Panthers move to 0-1-2 in overtime games this season.
High Point broke through for the first score of the game in the 34th minute when Hemby pounced on a rebound and headed it in to put the Panthers ahead 1-0. Joline had the ball at the edge of the penalty area and shook her defender before hitting a hard shot to the upper part of the goal. GWU keeper Erika Lenns reached up and saved the ball off the crossbar but Hemby rushed forward and headed it into the open net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Panthers doubled their lead in the 53rd minute as Joline got behind the GWU backline and beat Lenns with a shot from 10-yards out. Senior goalkeeper
Andrea Ritchie started the play with a goal kick to midfield that Hemby headed on. Joline beat the Running Bulldog defender to the ball and dribbled to the right before firing a shot back across the grain into the left side netting.
Gardner-Webb got on the board in the 70th minute when a blocked shot by Megan Tremblay fell to Megan Reimer just in front of the HPU goal where the forward hit it into net with her first touch.
Less than one minute later High Point had a chance to push its lead back to two but a header shot by freshman Melissa Sweredowski off a corner was saved by Gardner-Webb defender Sarah Morabito at the left post.
The score remained 2-1 until the 85th minute when Gardner-Webb's Addison Abee lofted a cleared corner into the box and Megan Curan popped a header over the onrushing Ritchie and into the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Both teams earned quality scoring chances but were denied by some skilled defensive plays. In the 101st minute freshman
Jacky Kessler got in on goal and crossed to an open Hemby but the midfielder's shot was stopped by Lenns with a diving save.
Three minutes later Reimer had a one-on-one chance against Ritchie but the HPU keeper came off her line to make an acrobatic save.
High Point had another chance in the 108th minute as Joline got free in the box but her shot was saved on the line by Gardner-Webb's Taylor Napoli .
High Point finished the game with a 25-13 advantage in shots including a 15-3 edge in shots on goal. The Panthers also earned eight corners to GWU's four. Ritchie made two saves in the game for HPU.
