Maddie Simpson had a career-high 54 assists, leading the High Point University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Campbell Tuesday at the Millis Center. The Panthers dropped the first set but came back to win the final three and pick up their third win of the season.
“I thought we showed real resiliency tonight,” said head coach
Jason Oliver. “After dropping the first set we stayed with our game plan and were able to finally get the win. Maddie did a great job distributing the ball and our outside hitters,
Megan Smith and
Audie Gonzalez, were great tonight. The Campbell defense couldn't find an answer for them.”
Simpson added 10 digs, three kills and two blocks helping HPU to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-16) win over Campbell. The win snaps HPU's eight –game losing streak, bringing the Panthers to 3-8 on the season. Smith ended the night with 21 kills and 12 digs while Gonzalez added 14 kills and 11 digs.
Senior captain
Julie Hershkowitz recorded 23 digs, bringing her career total to 1,932 and moving her in to third place all-time in the Big South. She passed Coastal Carolina's Jeanne Lambert who recorded 1,916 career digs from 1998-02.
The Camels opened the first set with an 8-1 run, serving up three aces and capitalizing on four HPU errors. The Panthers made a late run, closing the gap to three at 19-22 on a service ace by
Stephanie Wallin but the early deficit was too much to overcome, falling 25-22.
After committing 10 errors in the first set, the Panthers cut the number in half with just five in the second set on the way to a 25-15 win. High Point had 17 kills in the frame, with Smith tallying eight of them.
Molly Barlow came off the bench to play back row and had a clutch dig at the end of a long rally that went over the net, landing on Campbell's side for an HPU point and putting the Panthers ahead 19-14. HPU rolled after the play, ending the set on a 5-1 run. Simpson and
Michelle Chakirelis had a block to score the last point and HPU won 25-15.
In the third set Campbell came back from an early deficit to tie the score at 16-16 but Smith put down another kill, allowing HPU to side out. The Panthers scored three straight points after that, including one on an ace by Hershkowitz, extending the lead to 20-16. HPU was awarded the 21st point when the Campbell bench was given a red card and the Panthers went on to win the set 25-17.
The Panthers hits .467 in the final set to seal the 25-16 set victory and the 3-1 match win. Gonzalez carried the offense in the final frame with seven kills on ten attempts.
Barlow finished the game with 14 digs, one short of her career high. Wallin had eight kills and Chakirelis and
Courtney Johnk each added seven.
“So much of my success tonight was because I was able to distribute the ball to all my attackers,” Simpson said. “Megan and Audie had a great night on the outside but I also had options in the middle and it made for a successful night for all of us.”
The Panthers will travel to Davidson this weekend for the Nfinity Wildcat Classic. HPU will face Davidson, Boise State and Eastern Michigan.
