Arizona State came from behind to top the High Point University volleyball team in five sets Friday at the ASU Sheraton Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Freshman setter
Maddie Simpson had 47 assists and five blocks in the loss.
HPU won the first and third sets but Arizona State rallied to win the final two and hand the Panthers a 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 19-25, 13-15).
The Panthers led 10-6 in the final set but the Sun Devils went on a 9-3 run, taking advantage of three HPU attack errors to win the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

Megan Smith had a match-high 19 kills as well as 13 digs and
Audie Gonzalez posted 14 kills and 12 digs. Freshman
Michelle Chakirelis tallied six kills and five blocks in the match.
High Point battled to a 25-23 win in the first set, hitting .375 in the frame. Simpson had 15 assists in the set, allowing five different HPU attackers to register kills. With Simpson at the service line the Panthers took a quick 4-0 lead but Arizona State stayed in the set, tying the score at 7-7. HPU remained in control of the match, leading by as much as five at 15-10 on Smith's kill down the line. The Panthers retained the lead for much of the match until ASU tied the match 20-20. Senior
Stephanie Wallin had two kills late in the match, putting HPU ahead24-22 and winning the match 25-23.
HPU carried the momentum in to the second set, leading 14-11 on back-to-back blocks by Chakirelis and Simpson. The Sun Devils rattled off four straight points, three on HPU attack errors to put HPU down 15-14. Arizona State remained in the lead for the rest of the match, winning 25-18 and evening the match 1-1. HPU had seven attack errors in the set.
Arizona State took an early lead in the third frame before High Point tied it a 16-16. Chakirelis had a kill to put HPU ahead by one and the freshman combined with Simpson for another block to extend the lead to two and forced an ASU timeout. After the break HPU extended its lead to 20-17 and after another block from Simpson and Chakirelis the Sun Devils exhausted their last time out. Smith had three kills after the last break and Wallin had the final kills of the set, leading HPU to a 25-19 win.
The Sun Devils evened the match 2-2 with a 25-19 win in the fourth set. ASU outhit High Point .184 to .047 in the set, taking advantage of nine HPU attack errors. Gonzalez had six kills in the frame but Arizona State scored the last five points of the frame to win 25-19.
The Panthers will face UC Riverside at 8 p.m. The Highlanders lost 3-0 to Utah Valley in the first match of the tournament.
