The Mountaineers of Appalachian State handed HPU a 12-7 loss Wednesday at Smith Stadium in Boone, N.C. Senior Max Fulginiti went 1-3 with a walk and two runs scored and hit his 19th double of the season. He now needs three doubles to set the single season record at High Point. Junior Drew Dades made his third appearance of the season, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with one strikeout.

Freshman Wes Torrez made his second start for High Point, lasting just one inning, allowing one run on three hits in the first inning. He came back out for the second, surrendering a double to David Towarnicky on his first pitch of the inning before Cozart brought Jaime Schultz out of the bullpen.

Tyler Zupcic was the first batter Schultz faced, hitting a triple down the right field line. Zupcic came around to score when right fielder Nate Roberts misplayed the ball in the corner for his first error of the season.

HPU put up one run in the second inning off ASU starter Seth Grant. Fulginiti led off with a walk and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Pablo Rosario.

Grant got two quick outs on HPU in the third before Matt Gantner earned a walk, advancing to third on Fulginiti's 19th double of the season. Fulginiti is three doubles away from breaking Gerald Culler's record of 21 set in 1979. A balk brought Gantner in to score and Zach Tessier and Sal Pezzino both reached after getting hit by pitches. The Mountaineers went to the bullpen, bringing out David Port to face Mike Mercurio, who picked up two RBI with a single up the middle to bring High Point within two runs, down 6-4 in the middle of the third inning.

Appalachian State added two more runs in the third to make it an 8-4 lead and had the bases loaded but Schultz got Jeremy Dowdy to fly out to left field to end the inning.

The Mountaineers tacked on four more runs off Nick Schumacher, two earned. The other two scored on Roberts' second error of the game.

Dades came in to the game in the sixth inning, inheriting a runner at first who was thrown out trying to steal second base. With two outs in the inning Dades surrendered a basehit to Ryan Stetson but he was erased on a fielder's choice to end the inning. It was the only hit Dades would give up in his two innings of work. He had one strikeout in the inning.

Mike Gragilla had a pinch-hit double to lead off the ninth inning, advancing to third on a single by pinch-hitter Robbie Gilles. Scott Glover picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gragilla. Gilles and Kyle Wigmore, who earned a walk, both came around to score on wild pitches to make it a 12-7 deficit.

Gantner picked up three walks in the game, flying out to the warning track in his only official at-bat of the game.

The Panthers fall to 17-18 (4-8 Big South Conference) and are below .500 for the first time this season. They will host Radford this weekend for a Big South Conference series. It will be Heroes Weekend at Williard stadium. High Point firemen, police officers, EMS and United States military will receive special ticket prices of $1 for their entire party.
