Men's Basketball

Barbour named All-Big South first team

Nick Barbour
Dave Campbell
High Point University sophomore Nick Barbour was named to the All-Big South first team in men's basketball, the conference announced on Monday. A shooting guard, Barbour ranks third in the league in scoring with an 18.6 average in overall games, and ranks third in conference play with 18.2 points per game. Junior guard David Campbell was named to the Big South All-Academic team.

Barbour is one of the most lethal outside shooters in the Big South Conference. He led the league in three-point field goal percentage at 40.5 and was the only player in the Big South shooting over 40 percent while hitting at least 2.5 three pointers per game. He also ranked sixth in free throw percentage (75.7) and eighth in field goal percentage (42.3).

Barbour has scored over 20 points 13 times this season, including two 30-plus point games. He opened the season with 38 points against UNC Pembroke on Nov. 14 at the Millis Center. In that game, Barbour went 10-for-11 from three-point range to set the HPU record for treys in a game and the HPU and Big South records for three-point percentage in a game (90.9). He was named Big South Co-Player of the Week for that effort. His other 30-point performance came in the Panthers' 82-80 overtime victory at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 30. He hit the basket to send the game into overtime, then he tipped in his own initial shot in OT to win it for 30 in the game.

As the season wore on, teams defended Barbour very heavily and he began drawing many more fouls. He went to the line at least 10 times on four occasions and drained a career-high 11 free throws in HPU's win over Charleston Southern on Feb. 13, going 11-for-12. He tied the best free-throw shooting performance in HPU's Div. I era in the Panthers' win over Winthrop last week, going 9-for-9 from the line.

Barbour was named to the Big South Preseason All-Conference team. In 2008-09, Barbour led HPU with 14.2 points per game and was named to the Big South All-Freshman team.

Campbell is a three-time Millis Scholar-Athlete with a 3.7 grade-point average in Business and Finance. He is averaging 3.6 points and 2.3 rebounds and has played in every game for HPU this season. He has 17 three-pointers on the year and hit at least two treys in five games this year. He scored a season-high 14 points in HPU's 100-74 win over Hampden-Sydney on Nov. 21. He is averaging 4.1 points and 3.1 rebounds in his career.

The Panthers face UNC Asheville on the road in the first round of the Big South Tournament on Tuesday. The game will start at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Country Legends 98.3 and on the Big South Network. In their first season under head coach Scott Cherry, HPU finished the regular season 15-14 overall and 10-8 in the Big South after going 9-21 and 4-14 last year.
