Mackenzie Maier had 22 points, 10 blocks and nine rebounds to lead the High Point University women's basketball team to a 74-51 win over Campbell on Wednesday night in Buies Creek, N.C. The Panthers used a 22-3 run spanning both halves to take control of the game.
“We had two good days of practice and were able to carry that over to a great game,” head coach Tooey Loy said. “We were a very good basketball team tonight. We shared the ball, made great plays in transitions, had a lot of assists and played great defense. This is the type of basketball that we have to play game in and game out.”
Maier shot 7-14 from the floor and 4-5 from behind the arc to post the best scoring total of the season for High Point. The senior's 10 blocks are an HPU Division I single-game record, breaking her own record of seven which she has done in seven games.
“Mackenzie had an unbelievable performance tonight,” Loy said. “You hate that she didn't get the triple-double which was bad coaching on my part. I pulled her out one rebound shy and didn't know it at the time. Still it was a great game, one of the best I have seen at High Point.”
High Point struggled shooting the ball early in the game and trailed 13-9 after almost 10 minutes of play. The Panthers shot just 3-16 from the field and 0-4 from behind the arc to start the game.
HPU began to get its offense back on track as senior
Jurica Hargraves connected on a three-pointer and Maier hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 18-18 with just under eight minutes left in the half.
With the score tied at 20-20 with 7:18 left in the half, Maier hit a long jumper from the free throw line, sparking a 14-1 run over the final seven minutes to put HPU up, 34-21, at the half. Sophomore
Erin Reynolds had six points in the run and Maier had four for the Panthers. After making just three of its first 16 shots to start the half, High Point finished shooting 10-16 from the field.
The HPU defense held Campbell without a field goal in the final seven minutes of the period, forcing six turnovers and blocking six shots. Maier finished the half with six of High Point's eight blocked shots.
High Point continued its run to start the second half, outscoring the Lady Camels 8-2 to push the lead to 42-23 just three minutes into the period forcing a Campbell timeout.
Despite Campbell's best attempts, the Panthers' lead never shrunk below 14 in the second half as every attempt at a run by the Camels was met by a made basket from HPU on the other end. HPU shot 15-35 (42.9 percent) from the floor in the second half.
Three other players scored in double-digits for High Point, led by junior
Shamia Brown who posted 15 points and nine rebounds. Reynolds finished with 12 points in the game and Hargraves chipped in with 10.
High Point N.C., native Tonisha Baker led the Lady Camels in the game with 21 points and six rebounds.
High Point's defense stifled the Lady Camels' attack throughout the night, holding Campbell to 28.8 percent shooting from the field (21-73) while also forcing 14 turnovers and blocking 16 shots.
The win is the biggest of the season for HPU over a DI opponent and breaks a three-game losing streak for the Panthers. High Point moves back to .500 with the win, improving to 4-4, while Campbell is still winless at 0-6.
HPU will next head to Morgantown, W.Va., to take on the No. 10 team in the country, the West Virginia Mountaineers, on Saturday, Dec. 4. It will be the first time facing WVU for the Panthers who are 1-1 all-time against teams currently in the Big East. The game is set to tip off at 6 p.m.
