HPU women's basketball cruises to exhibition win

BOX SCORE

The High Point University women's basketball team cruised to an 89-24 exhibition win over St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Saturday at the Millis Center. Freshman Cheyenne Parker had 17 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Panthers and Mackenzie Maier posted 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

“We did a lot of good things today – we communicated well on defense, made good plays in transition and made some good stops,” said HPU head coach Tooey Loy. “We're sharing the ball well and playing good defense. It was a good game for us and now we get back to work to get ready for a very good VCU team this Friday.”

High Point opened up a huge lead in the first half and never looked back. Shortly after she checked in for the first time, Parker grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it 13-0 under four minutes into the game. On the next possession, St. Andrews' Natalie Whitman scored on a layup to put the Knights on the board for the first time.

Throughout the first half it was more of the same, with High Point University opening up leads of 22-4, 32-8 and finishing the half leading 45-10. Parker shined in her first action in a Panthers uniform, posting 10 points with six rebounds in the first half – both game highs for the period. LaTeisha Dean pitched in eight and Amy Dodd scored seven in the first half.

The Panthers scored the first six points of the second half on three-pointers by Jurica Hargraves and Frances Fields – both of which came on assists from Shamia Brown. As in the first half, Whitman scored the first basket for St. Andrews, making it 51-12.

Maier came to life late in the game, getting all 12 of her points and eight of her 12 rebounds in the second half. Behind Parker and Maier, sophomore Jazmin Cromartie came close to a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds and Dodd posted nine points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore point guard Erin Reynolds scored five points and added game highs of four rebounds and four steals.

Monique Lee scored seven points and Whitman scored six to lead St. Andrews. Both Lee and Whitman grabbed eight rebounds and Kimayah Fulcher pulled down six.

High Point University opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 12 when it hosts CAA-member Virginia Commonwealth at the Millis Center at 7 p.m. The Panthers are coming off a 17-14 season in which the team went 9-7 in Big South play. The Panthers return nine letter winners and four starters this season, including five seniors who all have starting experience in their collegiate careers.
