The Panthers picked up their second straight Big South win with a sweep over Gardner-Webb Friday at the Millis Center. Senior Stephanie Wallin had a match-high 13 kills and HPU was strong from the service line with eight aces in the match.

“It was good to see us come out and be consistent throughout the entire match,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “It was fun to watch Wallin play tonight. She had a great night and really held us through stretches when we could have fallen apart. We showed a lot of focus from the service line and put a lot of pressure on Gardner-Webb.”

Wallin hit .480 in the match, putting up four blocks in the 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-16). The win lifts HPU to 9-10 (4-1 Big South Conference) this season.

Freshman setter Maddie Simpson had 33 assists and senior libero Julie Hershkowitz had 25 digs.

The Panthers led 17-13 in the first set but the Bulldogs made a run at HPU's lead, making it an 18-17 match on a kill by Molly Rhyne. Megan Smith and Rhyne traded kills to a 20-18 HPU lead. With Smith at the service line the Panthers went on a four-point run, helped by two aces to extend High Point's lead to 24-18. GWU fought off three set points but Smith won the set for HPU with a kill, 25-21.

High Point forced a -.061 attack percentage from Gardner-Webb in the second set. Smith and Courtney Johnk each had four kills while the Bulldogs only had five as a team to go with eight errors.

Wallin ruled the final set, with eight of her 13 kills coming in the frame. With only one error, the senior hit .700 in the final set to lead HPU to the 25-16 win.

Sophomore Lauren Bell came off the bench in the third set and put up two assists and sophomore Molly Barlow had eight digs and one ace in the match.

The Panthers continue Big South action on Saturday with a 4 p.m. match against Presbyterian at the Millis Center. Gardner-Webb travels to Radford for a 4 p.m. match on Saturday.
