The High Point University volleyball team swept Winston-Salem State 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20) in the opening game of day two of the High Point University Classic. The Panthers improve to 6-2 on the season. Freshman outside hitter
Molly Barlow led HPU with 13 kills, 15 digs and three blocks. Sophomore
Breanna Holliday got her first start of the season at libero and had 18 digs and two service aces.
The Rams kept the first set close but HPU came out on top 25-23. Barlow had seven kills and four digs in the set. The Panthers limited WSSU to a .087 attack percentage. HPU took a 21-16 advantage on a kill by freshman outside hitter
Courtney Johnk but the Rams scored five of the next six points to come within one at 22-21. Senior outside hitter put down a kill for HPU and to extend the lead to 23-21. After a kill from Barlow the Panthers would win the set on an attack error from WSSU.
High Point jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the second set and would keep at least a seven point lead for the rest of the set, taking the frame 25-18. Freshman right side
Lauren Bell came off the Panther bench and put down five kills and a .556 attack percentage in the set. It was another impressive defensive set for High Point with seven Panthers registering at least one dig. Barlow had seven digs and Holliday added six.
The Panthers limited WSSU to a -.070 attack percentage. Freshman setter
Stephanie Kaminskas had six of her match-high 28 assists in the third frame and she added two kills. HPU took the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
High Point will take on Marshall in the final match of the High Point University Classic Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Millis Center.
