After dropping the first set, the High Point University volleyball team came back to win the next three sets and top Charlotte 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17) in the final game on day one of the High Point University Classic. Sophomore setter
Holly Fong played an excellent all-around game with four kills, 39 assists and 16 digs. Junior outside hitter
Megan Smith had a match-high 17 kills and added 11 digs. Freshman outside hitter
Molly Barlow came off the bench to contribute eight kills and 12 digs.
High Point was down 23-18 late in the first set but got kills from junior middle blocker
Anna Lott and Smith to come within three at 23-20. A service error from Lott gave Charlotte set point, 24-21. Barlow kept HPU in the set with a kill off the 49er's block. After a Charlotte timeout Kaitlin Knight got a kill on an HPU net error to give the 49ers set one, 25-22.
The teams battled for points early in the second set, knotting the score at six.
Stephanie Wallin and Barlow had kills, followed by a
Julie Hershkowitz service ace to put HPU up 9-6. Charlotte committed an attack error and Wallin put down another kill and High Point took an 11-6 advantage. Charlotte rallied late in the set, tying the score at 22. Lott put HPU back on top 23-22 with a kill and the Panthers took a 24-22 advantage on a 49er's attack error. Knight would get a kill to pull Charlotte within two but Smith put the set away for the Panthers with her fifth kill of the set. HPU took the second set 25-23.
The third set was another tight match-up. Charlotte hit .140 and the Panthers barely outhit them with a .170 attack percentage. HPU took advantage of nine attack errors from Charlotte and Smith had six kills in the set to give HPU the 25-23 set win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Panther's defense was strong in set five, limiting Charlotte to a .087 attack percentage and forcing six attack errors by the 49ers. Wallin had four kills in the set and a .444 hitting percentage to go with two blocks to lead HPU to a 25-17 victory in the fourth set and a 3-1 match win.
The High Point University Classic continues Sunday with four more games at the Millis Center. High Point (5-2) kicks off the day against Winston-Salem State (0-4) at 12 p.m. Marshall (5-0) and Charlotte (2-4) face off in the 2 p.m. game and Davidson (1-5) and Winston-Salem State battle it out in the 4:30 match. High Point and Marshall will play in the final game of the tournament at 7 p.m.
