The High Point University volleyball team extended their winning streak to three matches with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-15) sweep of La Salle Saturday at the UNC Greensboro Tournament. The Panthers improve to 9-5 with the win. Junior middle blocker
Stephanie Wallin (Plymouth, Minn., Robbinsdale Armstrong) led HPU with a .750 attack percentage and 13 kills but it was a balanced offence that got the win with 10 Panthers registering a kill.
The Panthers took set one 25-18 with the HPU defense forcing six La Salle attack errors and holding the Explorers to a .071 hitting percentage. HPU hit .242 in the set. The Panthers got seven kills on eight attempts from Wallin for a .875 attack percentage. The Panthers took a commanding 15-7 lead on a kill from
Molly Barlow (Phoenix, Ariz., Seton Catholic)and never let La Salle back in the set, keeping at least a six point lead on the Explorers for the rest of the frame.
High Point took an early 10-7 lead in the second set, forcing a La Salle timeout. HPU didn't let down after the break, going on a eight point run to take an 18-7 lead and forcing La Salle to use their second timeout of the set. The Explorers got a kill out of their second timeout but
Megan Kaminskas (Flagstaff, Ariz., Flagstaff) put down one of her five kills in the set to give HPU a 19-8 lead. The Panthers cruised to a 25-11 set win and a 2-0 match advantage. HPU outhit La Salle .576 to .033 in the frame.
Oliver went to his bench in the third set getting freshmen
Courtney Johnk (Larkspur, Calif., Redwood),
Lauren Bell (Dublin, Ohio, Dublin Coffman) and
Jamie McDonald (Shoreline, Wash., Shorecrest) into the rotation along with senior
Tara Dyer (Fountain Hills, Ariz., Fountain Hills). Johnk had three kills in the set with McDonald adding two and Bell posting one kill. Dyer put up two digs. The Panthers won the set 25-15, forcing a -.083 La Salle attack percentage.
Sophomore setter
Holly Fong (Sebastopol, Calif., El Molino) finished the day with 32 assists and Barlow posted seven kills and six digs in the match. Freshman setter
Stephanie Kaminskas (Flagstaff, Ariz., Flagstaff) had four assist off the bench and sophomore defensive specialist
Breanna Holliday (Hendersonville, N.C., West Henderson) came off the bench to add eight digs.
The Panthers will face Georgetown at 4:30 p.m. in the final match of the UNC Greensboro Tournament.
