Box Score Charleston Southern drained 17 three pointers as CSU edged the High Point University women's basketball team, 82-79 on Monday night in the Millis Athletic Center.
HPU (11-12, 7-3 BSC) had four players in double figures. Shamia Brown tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. LaTeisha Dean also tallied 18 points while Jurica Hargraves added 17. Mackenzie Maier poured in 10 points. Frances Fields notched 10 assists and eight points.
For the Lady Bucs (9-14, 3-7 BSC) Pam Tolbert had 20 points and was 6-of-12 from outside the arc. Tina DeCarvalho had 15 points with 5-of-8 from three point range. Katie Tull added 12 points while Kelsey Wasmer had 11 points. The 17 three pointers from CSU tied the HPU record for most three pointers allowed by a Division I opponent.
High Point held an early 9-6 lead, but CSU game out of the gates firing, making 50-percent of their shots from outside the arc on 11-of-22. The Lady Bucs took a 13 point lead (35-22) with 7:15 on the clock, but the Panthers responded with a 10-3 run, highlighted by back-to-back layups from Dean, to cut the lead down to six with four and half minutes in the half. CSU did not back down though and took its largest lead of the game, on top 14 with 16 seconds. A three pointer from Hargraves in the final 10 seconds sent the Panthers in to the break down 48-37.
The Panthers continued their run into the second half, opening the period with a 10-2 run sparked by a three pointer from Hargraves, who also ended the run with back-to-back threes. CSU and HPU battled back and forth over the next several minutes and were tied at 58 with 9:41 left to play. The Panthers took back the lead at 7:06 off a layup from Hargraves, but Charleston Southern responded with a 10-1 run to go up 73-65 with just under five minutes remaining.
HPU retaliated with a 12-5 run of its own and pulled within one (78-77) with just over a minute left in the contest. Lechell Rush connected on a layup the next CSU possession. High Point was forced to foul Tolbert with 10 seconds to play. She drained both charity shots to give CSU a five point lead. Fields drained a jumper on the next trip down the court to make it a one possession game. The Panthers fouled Kelsey Wasmer, who missed both, but as the two teams battled for the rebound time expired.
Both teams were relatively even in other statistics across the board. HPU and CSU both had 49 rebounds. The Panthers tallied 19 turnovers while forcing 18 from CSU. High Point had four blocks, three of which were from Maier.
The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 when they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. Game time against Gardner-Webb is set for 4:30 p.m.
