Volleyball drops 3-0 decision on the road to Liberty

The High Point University volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-18) to the Liberty Flames Tuesday in Lynchburg, Va. The Panthers fall to 16-16 (5-10 Big South Conference) on the season.

“Liberty was really good tonight and showed weaknesses in out armor,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “It was a perfect game to learn from and get better going in to the conference tournament. It is a wake up call for us, we have to improve.”

Freshman Courtney Johnk (Larkspur, Calif., Redwood)led the Panthers with 8 kills and two blocks in the loss while junior libero Julie Hershkowitz (Scottsdale, Ariz., Seton Catholic) came up with 20 digs and senior captain Lyndsay Rowley (New Albany, Ohio, New Albany) had 11 digs.

High Point dropped the first set 25-14 with the Lady Flames holding HPU to a .000 hitting percentage. Liberty hit .345 with 14 kills to win the set.

The second set was a tight battle with Liberty just edging High Point 25-23. The Panthers tied the score at 20-20 on a service error by Liberty. The teams traded points to another tie at 23-23 before LU's Karyl Bacon put down back-to-back kills to give the Flames the 25-23 set win and 2-0 match advantage.

In the third set Liberty rolled to a 25-18 win, taking the match 3-0.

The Panthers play their final regular season game Friday at 5:30 at Charleston Southern.
