Junior Stephanie Wallin (Plymouth, Minn., Robbinsdale Armstrong) led the High Point University volleyball team with 17 kills as the Panthers topped Presbyterian 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 28-26, 28-26) Friday at the Millis Center.

“It is a great win against a very good opponent in Presbyterian,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “We worked really hard to control our side of the net and it was good to see the positive results. It is something to build on in the final push toward the Big South Championship.”

The Panthers took set one 25-14. Five different attacker put down two kills in the frame and sophomore Holly Fong (Sebastopol, Calif., El Molino) had 10 assists. HPU controlled the set, outhitting the Blue Hose .280 to -.129.

Presbyterian rallied in the second set, getting five kills from freshman Presley Mabrey to win the set 25-23. PC had a 24-19 lead in the set but HPU fought off four set points before a kill from Allison Brown gave Presbyterian the set win and tied the match at 1-1.

The teams kept the third set close with 13 ties and six lead changes. A kills from Megan Smith (Bellbrook, Ohio, Bellbrook) tied the set at 22-22 and the Panthers took a 23-22 advantage on an attack error by Mabrey. The teams traded kills until the final tie at 26-26 when Amanda Nettles had a service error to put HPU up 27-26. Smith and Anna Lott (Lincoln, Neb., Lincoln Northeast) put up a block to give HPU the 28-26 set win.

The final set also needed extra points as the teams battled to another 26-26 tie late in the set. Wallin came through with her 17th kills of the match to put High Point up 27-26 and HPU capitalized on an attack error by Mabrey to win the set 28-26 and the match 3-1.

Fong finished the match with a double-double of 48 assists and 12 digs and Smith's double-double came from 10 kills and 13 digs. Megan Kaminskas (Flagstaff, Ariz., Flagstaff) hit .467 for the night with eight kills and nine blocks (three solo).

The Panthers (14-14, 4-8 BSC) face non-conference foe Winston-Salem State Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Millis Center.
