The High Point University volleyball team fell 1-3 (17-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22) to Radford Wednesday night at the Millis Center despite a match-high 18 kills from junior
Stephanie Wallin (Plymouth, Minn.).
“Radford outscrapped us tonight,” said head coach
Jason Oliver. “My hat is off to them, they had our number. We know what we have to change, we just have to have the confidence to play our game and force other teams to make mistakes.”
The Highlanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match but HPU kept the match alive with a 25-12 win in the third set. The Panthers nearly forced a fifth set but Radford edged HPU 25-22 in set four to win the match. The Panthers fall to 13-14 (3-8 Big South) while Radford improves to 12-16 (2-10 Big South) for the season.
Radford outhit HPU .276 to .027 in the first set and it was six Panther attack errors that were the difference in the frame. Wallin had five kills in the set and hit .364.
Both teams totaled 12 kills in the second set but Radford was able to get the 25-22 win with only five attack errors while HPU committed eight. The second set was tied as late as 19-19 but the Highlanders went on a 6-3 run to finish the set.
High Point won set three by a convincing 25-12 score.
Megan Kaminskas (Flagstaff, Ariz., Flagstaff) and Wallin each had three kills and
Courtney Johnk (Larkspur, Calif., Redwood) had a set-high five kills. The Panthers also dominated at the net with five blocks in the frame.
The Panthers trailed early in the fourth set, down by as much as four at 14-18, before coming back to knot the score at 18-18. The score would be tied two more at times, finally at 21-21 before a kill by Mariah Nussbaum put Radford ahead for the final time. The Highlanders went on to a 25-22 win.
Julie Hershkowitz (Scottsdale, Ariz., Seton Catholic) finished the match with 34 digs and
Holly Fong (Sebastopol, Calif., El Molino) put up 40 assists.
The Panthers host Presbyterian Friday at 7 p.m. at the Millis Center.
