High Point junior forward Arizona Reid made a big impression on the Millis Center crowd in the Panther's home opener on Wednesday night against Covenant College finishing with a career-best double-double in leading HPU to a 94-67 victory.

Reid, who connected on 15-of-20 field goal attempts in the game, posted 32 points and 17 rebounds including 22 points and 11 boards in the second half. Twelve different players scored for HPU against Covenant as all 15 roster players earned playing time.

The Panthers jumped out to a 10-0 lead, holding the Scots scoreless over the first 3:30 of the game. Covenant eventually closed their deficit to one, 14-13, on a free throw by Jacob Skogen at the 11:22 mark. High Point slowly built its lead back over the next several minutes and took a 35-29 advantage into the break.

"We got the early lead and then really didn't execute well on either end of the floor in the first half," said HPU head coach Bart Lundy, who earned his 50th win at High Point. "I thought we came out in the second half and did some things better. We are still a young team and have lots of areas to work on, but they played hard in the second half. Arizona was outstanding tonight around the basket."

High Point grabbed a double-digit lead just two minutes into the second half and never looked back maintaining a 20+ point margin for the remainder of the game.

HPU shot a season best 54.7 percent from the floor in the game while holding Covenant to just 29.0 percent. The Panthers dished out 30 assists on 41 baskets with junior Mike Jefferson leading the way with a personal-high 12 in the game. The Panthers did struggle with ball security committing a season high 21 turnovers and were whistled for 27 fouls.

Jefferson added 10 rebounds and seven assists as the HPU point guard nearly tallied a triple-double. Senior Landon Quick chipped in 13 points and six assists in the win and Jerald Minnis also reached double figures scoring 10.

Covenant teammates and brothers Caleb (14 pts) and Jacob Skogen (11 pts) led the way for the Scots on offense. No CC player grabbed more than four rebounds in the game as High Point also out-boarded Covenant, 61-27.

With the victory, HPU remains perfect at 8-0 in season home openers in their Division I Era. The win also improved the Panthers all-time record against the Scots to 2-0.

High Point will have nearly a week off from competition before returning to the hardwood on Tuesday, Nov. 21 against Chowan College at 7 p.m. in the Millis Athletic Center.
