Panther Women's Soccer Just Misses at UNC Asheville

Game tying shot deflects off crossbar again

Traci Anders paced the HPU offense with three shots

High Point allowed its first goal in the last three games midway through the first half and that goal stood up as UNC Asheville edged High Point, 1-0 in women's soccer action at Greenwood Field on Friday afternoon.

The Panthers dropped to 3-10 overall and 2-3 in the BSC with the loss, which broke a two-game HPU winning streak. The Bulldogs improved their record to 4-4-1 overall and 2-1-2 in the Big South, snapping a five-game winless streak and four-game scoreless stretch.

The only goal came at the 32:56 mark of the first half. Lauren Wingo sent a pass to Robyn Busha who then hit a shot from 20 yards out for her fifth goal of the season.

High Point's best opportunity came with three minutes left to play when senior Traci Andersen hit the cross bar on a shot from five yards out. Andersen led the Panther offense with three shots on the day.

"We tried hard, but we didn't work hard enough," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "There is a difference between the two. I was really disappointed in today's effort by many of our players. It is upsetting to have the talent we have on this team and for us not to be consistent in our play."

Bulldog goalkeeper Veronica Lazar stopped five Panther shots to earn her third shutout of the season. HPU rookie netminder Marisa Abbott finished with five saves.

HPU next plays at home on Wednesday, Oct. 11 against the Winthrop Eagles at 7 p.m. at Richard Vert Track & Soccer Stadium.
