Box Score The High Point University volleyball team captured their third consecutive road win with an impressive 3-1 (24-30, 30-25, 30-18, 30-20) victory at Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (4-12, 2-1 Big South) dropped the opening game but rallied with three straight wins to post a perfect 3-0 record for the week. The victory marked the 200th in the 10-year career of HPU head coach Chad Esposito. With the loss, Coastal slipped to 4-13 overall and 1-2 in Big South play.
"We were sluggish to start today's match," said Esposito. "We just couldn't get things flowing early, but once we finally settled down in game two we really played well. I thought our defense was tremendous and that really sparked our offense. It was a total team effort. I am extremely proud of our determination and effort in winning a pair of tough road conference games this weekend."
Coastal grabbed the early lead in the match taking advantage of inconsistent passing by HPU. The Chants carried the momentum into the second game, grabbing a 22-15 lead midway through the frame. The Panthers finally started clicking running off 10 consecutive points to earn a lead they would never relinquish.
The Panthers maintained the momentum behind a scrappy defensive effort and consistent offense output. HPU captured the final two game victories with double-digit margins.
Junior Jamie Kaufman finished with a career best 33 kills in the match for HPU. It marked the first time in her career that she has eclipsed the 30-kill mark in a match. She also tallied 10 digs to earn her eighth double-double of the season.
Ashley Johnson recorded a season best 12 kills and Audie Gonzalez posted 11 kills to also reach double-digits for the Panthers on offense. Sophomore setter Kristina Taylor handed out 49 assists and recorded 16 digs.
Defensively, High Point posted its second straight 100+ dig performance finishing with 112 as five HPU players reached double-digits. Sophomore libero Lauren Hatch led the way with a personal best 35 digs, marking her second 30+ dig performance this season. Other Panthers reaching double figures included Tara Dyer (18) and Gonzalez (22).
Ashley Scheible paced the CCU offense with 12 kills while Megan Pollard was the Chanticleers' top back-row performer finishing with 26 digs.
