Box Score Martina Knotkova scored 18 points and Pam Thornborrow provided 17 points to lead Birmingham-Southern to a 67-55 win over High Point in a women's basketball battle of Panthers on Tuesday night.
The visiting Panthers were led by Katie O'Dell who scored 12 points, while Candyce Sellars and Katie Ralls collected 10 points apiece.
The host Panthers won their second straight Conference contest to improve to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in league play, while HPU dips to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in the Conference.
Ralls had a game-high five steals and tallied a team-high seven rebounds to help HPU. Emily Mills notched nine points and four boards.
BSC never trailed, although HPU tied it up twice in the first six minutes. The visiting Panthers closed the margin to one, 24-23, with three minutes left, but BSC pulled out to a 36-23 lead at halftime.
High Point turned up the defensive pressure to open the second half, whittling BSC's lead to five at 42-37 seven minutes in. But Birmingham-Southern put together a 9-0 run to go up 51-37, and increased the lead to as much as 16 with 7:20 left to play. High Point cut the margin to eight with under four minutes on the clock, but BSC held on for the 67-55 upset.
BSC shot 58.8 percent in the second half and 48.9 percent overall, going 5-of-14 from three-point range and 16-of-23 from the free throw line. BSC also out-rebounded High Point, 38-32, but committed more turnovers with 21 compared to High Point's 16.
HPU returns home to open a four-game homestand beginning Saturday against eight-time defending Big South champion Liberty in the Millis Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
