Box Score Stephen F. Austin's Nikki Carr hit a three pointer with three seconds remaining in the contest to propel the Lady Jacks to an 82-81 victory over High Point in the first round of the Air Force Classic. SFA improves to 2-3 on the season while HPU falls to 3-2.
The Panthers had four players in double figures tonight. Raven Truslow led the way with 15 points, including going five-for-six from the free throw line. Katie Ralls had 14 while Tonya Tripp had 12 points and eight rebounds. Candyce Sellars added in 11 points and had five assists. Katie O'Dell led both teams in the rebounding category with 11.
For the Lady Jacks Britany Vinson scored 19 points. Kendria Smith added 16 while LaToya Mills had 11. Carr rounded out the double digit scoring with 10.
SFA scored first in the game and was up by three before Caitlin Thys hit the first Panther basket at the 17:16 mark. A pair of free throws from Ralls at 15:58 put High Point up for the duration of the first half. The Panthers led by as many as 13 in the first and entered halftime with an eight point lead.
The Panthers started the second half strong and jumped out to an 18 point lead (the largest of the game) before Stephen F. Austin hit its first basket. Smith connected for a lay-up to spark the Lady Jacks rally.
High Point maintained the lead until 2:47 left in the game when Vinson hit a three to tie the game at 75. The Panthers again pulled ahead when Ralls hit a jumper for the two point advantage.
HPU held off SFA through the last minute a half and was in front by two with six seconds remaining. The Lady Jacks had to go the length of the court and found Carr way outside for the game winning shot.
High Point held the advantage in rebounding, 39-29 and forced 15 SFA turnovers.
The Panthers will face Bucknell tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. MTN (4:00 p.m. EST) in the consolation game of the Air Force Classic. SFA will play host team Air Force at 4:30 p.m. MTN for the championship.
