Ashley Johnson.
Whitney Kaltenegger served out the final four points to help the Panthers claim their first win in a home opener since 2001.
"We're pleased to open up our home schedule with a victory," High Point head coach
Chad Esposito said. "We lost to them a year ago in four games, and it's nice to be able to turn it around in a year's time with a young team. We had a very balanced offensive attack, served aggressively, and our defense stepped up and played big at times.
"Michelle had an outstanding all around game. It's rare when a setter plays the kind of defense she did tonight."
Five Panthers (Pickens, Kaufman, Johnson, Feiser and
Tara Mahoney) recorded at least six kills.
Jenelle Stouffer led the way defensively for HPU with 18 digs, while
Kim Anderson chipped in 16. Pickens added 10 digs for her fifth double-double in six tries this season.
Tamara Gallen led the Wildcats defensively with a match-high 22 digs.
Jenna Dykstra contributed 37 assists and 17 digs, while
Liz Williamson added 12 kills.
"Davidson is a tough team to play because they're very gritty on defense and get a lot of balls up," Esposito said. "We were able to rise to that level and continue to finish off long rallies with kills."
The Panthers will face Bowling Green, Delaware State, Robert Morris and host West Virginia in this weekend's West Virginia Invitational. The event begins Saturday in Morgantown.
