Box Score High Point's streaking volleyball team captured its fourth-consecutive win Friday night, a 3-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in the Big South Conference opener for both teams in the Millis Center. The Panthers took the match by a linescore of 30-23, 30-28, 29-31, 30-22.
The Panthers (7-7, 1-0 Big South) got 56 assists and 10 digs from
Michelle Feiser, who recorded her 2,000th career assist in the contest.
Jamie Kaufman contributed 24 kills,
Lindsey Pickens chipped in 17 kills and 13 digs on a .357 hitting percentage, and
Kim Anderson led a strong defensive effort with a match-high 27 digs for HPU.
High Point has now won four straight matches for the first time since 1998.
The Lady Chants (7-5, 0-1) got 15 kills from
Katherine Jensen and 11 kills from
Laura Obert.
"This is one of the biggest wins in our Division I history," High Point head coach
Chad Esposito said. "Coastal's been playing very well -- they've beaten West Virginia and NC State and were picked second in the Big South's preseason poll -- and to open up the conference schedule with a win over them is a huge step for our program.
"We hit 25 percent (.253) against one of the best defensive teams in our league -- which shows how well we played offensively -- and we held them to 15 percent (.159), showing how strong our defense and blocking were."
Five Panthers reached double-figures in digs: Anderson, Pickens,
Whitney Kaltenegger,
Jenelle Stouffer, and Feiser, who was two kills away from a triple-double. HPU out-dug the Lady Chants by a 79-62 count.
Ashley Johnson collected nine blocks and 13 kills.
"We had good blocking, great backcourt defense, and took advantage of the opportunities we had on offense," Esposito said.
A kill by
Rachel Schamberger gave the Panthers a 30-23 victory in game one, and a block by Schamberger and
Tara Mahoney lifted the Panthers to a 2-0 lead. Coastal fought back and took a 29-25 lead in game three before HPU fought off four game points to tie the score at 29-29, but a Jensen kill and a block by Obert and
Jennifer Hampton pulled CCU within 2-1.
HPU re-grouped and closed things out with a 30-22 win in game four, leading by as many as nine points. Kaufman had the final three kills of the game to begin the spirited Millis Center celebration.
Hampton led CCU with 36 assists, while Jensen contributed a team-high 14 digs.
"It was a high-quality match, and it's fun for our players to play in an environment like that," Esposito said.
HPU will look to keep the streak going Saturday afternoon at home against Charleston Southern (2:00 pm). Coastal visits Winthrop on Saturday (also at 2:00 pm).
