Box Score Birmingham-Southern used the momentum of a comeback win in game one to take games two and three for a 3-0 victory over High Point Saturday afternoon in a Big South Conference volleyball battle of Panthers in the Millis Center.
BSC won by a linescore of 33-31, 30-20, 30-22, and improves to 14-10 (8-4 in Big South play). HPU drops to 17-15 (5-7) and completes its home regular-season slate with a 12-3 record.
Jana Smelley led BSC with 14 kills, while Lillian Henderson added 10 kills on a .563 attack percentage. Lindsey Herzog tallied a match-high 21 digs, while Kyndall Waters provided 46 assists and eight digs.
Kim Anderson had 19 digs for High Point to extend her consecutive-match streak with at least 10 digs to 36 straight matches. Anderson is now just eight digs shy of 1,000 for her two-year High Point career.
Jamie Kaufman led HPU with 16 kills. Michelle Feiser collected 36 assists, nine digs and five blocks. Whitney Kaltenegger had seven kills against no errors for a .636 hitting percentage, and added seven digs.
High Point maintained a lead throughout game one before BSC's Cassie Reed tied things up at 21-21 with a kill. But HPU came back and had five game points (the first at 29-27) before BSC fought each one off and then took game one on a kill by Rachel Malmborg.
"We had a lot of opportunities today to take each of the games, but whether it was blocking errors, hit errors or ball-handling errors, we let ourselves down," HPU head coach Chad Esposito said. "It's hard to recover after having five game points in the first game.
"We tried to re-group, but then other areas started to suffer -- hitting, passing, blocking, you name it."
HPU won the first four points of game two and led 6-4 before BSC won 12 of the next 17 points to claim a 16-9 advantage. The visiting Panthers hit .417 in the frame to claim a 30-20 win on a kill by Reed.
High Point also jumped out to a lead in game three, claiming the first five points and building a 12-4 advantage on a service ace by Kaufman. HPU weathered a mini-BSC rally and led 17-12 after a kill by Tara Mahoney. But Birmingham-Southern came storming back to put together a 16-1 run and eventually closed out a 30-22 win.
Anderson and Heather Butt were honored as part of Senior Day festivities before the match.
High Point heads out of town for its final two regular-season matches Tuesday at UNC Asheville and next Saturday at Winthrop.
"We didn't play well as a team, and need to do a better job as we head out on the road," Esposito said. "It's disappointing. We know we're capable of a whole lot better. This team has to learn to play to its potential every night."
