Box Score High Point's volleyball team got back on track Wednesday night with a 3-0 blanking of Wofford in non-conference action in the Millis Center. The Panthers claimed the victory by a linescore of 30-23, 30-22, 30-28.
HPU improves to 15-12, while Wofford falls to 8-16.
Jamie Kaufman (17 kills), Ashley Johnson (14 kills) and Lindsey Pickens (13 kills) all reached double-figures offensively for the Panthers.
Kim Anderson led all players with 18 digs to notch her 31st-consecutive match with 10 or more digs (the nation's fifth-longest streak). Michelle Feiser provided 44 assists and nine digs, while Whitney Kaltenegger contributed a season-high 16 digs.
The Terriers got a team-high 10 kills, 12 digs and seven blocks from Katie Laser. Shana Glenn also reached double-figures defensively with 11 digs, while Rhea DeJesus chipped in 24 assists. Meredith Brantley added seven kills and five digs.
"It was a great team effort tonight," HPU head coach Chad Esposito said. "We finally played with some heart and hustle. We were superb defensively, and everyone finally started to click on defense like we're capable of doing."
"The last few days in practice, we've focused on defensive and blocking techniques. We did a much better job tonight of sealing off holes for the other team's hitters, and came up with good blocking and defense tonight."
HPU took the first game, 30-23, on a Johnson kill to go up 1-0. "Ashley and Lindsey were very effective on offense for us, while Kim and Whitney had terrific nights picking up the other team's attacks, Esposito said. "We distributed the ball well."
High Point built an 11-5 lead in game two before the Terriers battled back to pull within 18-15 on a kill by Christal Carey. But the Panthers won seven of the game's final nine points to pull away for a 30-22 victory.
Wofford jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game three and led until the PAnthers tied things up and then took a 24-23 advantage on back-to-back kills by Johnson. The teams would battle back and forth and be deadlocked at 24-24, 26-26, 27-27 and 28-28 before a kill by Kaufman and an ace by Pickens on match point helped the Panthers shatter a three-game skid.
The Panthers improve to 11-1 in the Millis Center this season, and visit Radford on Friday night and Liberty on Saturday.
"We're a different team at home," Esposito said. "We get excited and more mentally prepared to play. It's good to bounce back after a tough road trip and to knock off a good Wofford team.
"We have a big weekend ahead of us. We're gonna have to play with a lot of intensity on the road, where nothing comes easy."
