Joy Haynes' goal in the 12th minute held up to give UNC Asheville a 1-0 win over High Point in Big South Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field in Asheville.
The Panthers (5-5-0 overall) suffered their first Big South setback of the season (2-1-0), while the Bulldogs (5-4-1, 2-0-1) captured their fourth-straight victory.
Hannah Nail made seven saves in goal for the Panthers, who have lost four of five matches this season by identical 1-0 scores. All four wins in Asheville's winning streak have come by 1-0 counts.
The only goal of the game came in the 12th minute when Stephanie Feltis sent a perfect pass to Haynes, who took the ball from 20 yards out and scored on a 10-yard blast for a 1-0 UNC Asheville lead. It was Haynes' second goal of the season.
Asheville goalkeeper Mich Mattos picked up her fifth shutout of the season and fourth straight. She has not allowed a goal in the last 424 minutes of play.
High Point's two best chances to score came from Jen Evans. She fired a shot from 10 yards out that Mattos saved in the 50th minute, and then in the 88th minute, the Panthers got the ball to Evans on a corner kick, but her header was again stopped by Mattos.
The Bulldogs held a slim 14-12 edge in shots. Evans led HPU with five shots, while Emily Lanham added three.
HPU will look to get back on track Monday night at Gardner-Webb. Kickoff in Boiling Springs is set for 7:00 pm.
