Box Score

High Point had its six-match win streak broken Thursday night by former conference foe Elon in a five-set match in the Koury Center. The Phoenix claimed the win by a linescore of 30-27, 31-33, 30-24, 21-30, 15-9.

HPU dropped to 14-10, while Elon improved to 11-8.

Jamie Kaufman led the Panthers with 20 kills, while Lindsey Pickens added 15 kills and Ashley Johnson contributed 14 kills. Kim Anderson notched 21 digs to lead the defense while Michelle Feiser posted 11 digs and 49 assists.

Anderson has now recorded at least 10 digs in each of her last 28 matches, which is the seventh-longest streak in the nation.

Feiser and Tara Mahoney also had six kills and five blocks apiece.

"We played well in spurts," HPU head coach Chad Esposito said. "Elon did a good job blocking in certain games. We were able to effectively hit around that in games 2 and 4, but unfortunately a lot of service errors and our passing let us down."

"Michelle had a big night. She and Ashley did a good job at the net tonight."

The Phoenix took the lead in game one at 5-4 and led the rest of the game. With Elon ahead 29-22, High Point made a five point run off of Elon errors to cut the lead to two at 29-27, but Elon was able to finish the game 30-27 on an Emily Lucci kill.

In game two, down 4-3, the Panthers went on an 8-0 scoring run to take the lead at 11-4. High Point would lead by as much as 10 before Elon tied the game at 28-28. After being tied at 31, High Point took the lead off of an Elon service error and finished the game at 33-31 on a kill from Kaufman.

Ahead 24-23 in game three, the Phoenix outscored the Panthers, 6-1, to finish the game 30-24 behind solid hitting and effective serving. High Point took control in game four with an early lead it sustained throughout the game. The Panthers hit .324 with only four errors to finish the game 30-21 and send the match to a fifth game.

In game five, Elon jumped to a quick 4-1 lead before High Point closed the gap to one at 7-6. From that point, the Phoenix went on a 5-0 scoring run to lead by six at 12-6 before closing the game at 15-9.

Four Elon players reached double-figures in kills: Britany Westphal (17), Emily Hayes (13) and Lucci (10), along with Juliena Gigon (12 kills, 11 digs). MK Spear led the Elon defense with 20 digs, while Natalie Moore posted 57 assists.

"It's tough playing on the road," Esposito said. "We need to find a level of consistency on the road so that we play well at all times and don't suffer through peaks and valleys. We're looking forward to taking some time off to rest and heal some injuries, and we look forward to working hard as we get into the heart of our conference schedule."

High Point returns to action on Friday, October 22, in a 7:00 match at Charleston Southern.
