Juho Karjalainen assisted on a pair of first half goals to help UNC Wilmington record a 3-0 win over visiting High Point in men's soccer action Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 4-1-1, while the Panthers dropped to 1-5-1.
Adam Stauffer opened the scoring for UNCW in the 22nd minute. Nick Acosta's throw-in found Karjalainen, who headed the ball to a streaking Stauffer for the initial goal of the game.
The Seahawks upped their lead to 2-0 when Karjalainen played a ball to Keith Shevlin, who sent a cross to the middle of the box where Daniel Butner's header beat Panther goalkeeper Matt Long just inside the post.
Jason Small closed out the scoring seconds before halftime with a free kick from just outside of the penalty area.
High Point threatened several times in the second half, but Mike Shaughness made three saves. HPU's Giovanni Bernal hit the crossbar in the 79th minute and Alex Thompson's blast from the top of the penalty area sailed just wide in the 82nd minute.
The shutout was the third in a row for UNCW.
Long made four saves for the Panthers, who were outshot 11-9. Kenzo Tochiki and Luke Lemanski led HPU with two shots apiece.
The Panthers return home to face Davidson Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Albion Millis Stadium. Admission is free.
