Women's Basketball Falls Short to Lady Aggies, 52-50

Box Score

Camile Akins scored a game-high 16 points and four steals to lead North Carolina A&T to a narrow victory over host High Point, 52-50 in non-conference action on Monday night in the Millis Center. The Lady Aggies avenged a 45 point loss to the Panthers back on December 7, 2002.

High Point's Katie O'Dell finished with a team-high 15 points, three assists, one block and a steal in the loss.

The Lady Aggies improved their overall record to 2-7 while the Panthers drop to 4-5 on the season. The last time High Point was defeated by A&T dates back to the 1980-81 season.

High Point started very strong going on an 11-4 run the first six minutes of the game. However, A&T weathered the threat and started to pull away from the Panthers by going on a 23-7 run to end the half and walk into the locker room with a 20-32 advantage. Akins finished the half with 13 points while her team out-rebounded High Point by a margin of 28-16.

The Panthers started the second half very strong by cutting into the lead and going on an 8-0 run. Charlena Martin (12 points) contributed with two key free throws to close the lead to two, 30-32. Yet, the Lady Aggies pushed ahead again in an 11-3 run to get back to a 11 point lead capped off by a lay-up from Tia Richardson (nine points and 12 rebounds) at the 15:06 mark, 33-43.

Both teams battled back and forth throughout the last 15:00 minutes of play as High Point whittled the lead down to just two points by a 3-pointer from Emily Mills (11 Points) with just 21-seconds left on the clock to make the score 48-50. However, the Lady Aggies at the end held on to the narrow lead and ran out the clock for the win. A&T's Yanumbe Sherman finished with 15 points in the win.

High Point will be back in action against Longwood in the Millis Center on Saturday (4:00 pm).
