High Point ran into a maize-and-blue buzzsaw Wednesday night in the form of Michigan, which jumped out to a big lead and never looked back en route to an 84-49 win over the Panthers at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines stay perfect on the season (2-0), while the Panthers drop to 1-2.

The Panthers made just one of their first 12 shots, and Michigan took advantage, scoring 21 of the game's first 23 points. The Wolverines held the Panthers to just 23 percent shooting from the floor (7-for-30) in the first half while shooting almost 60 percent themselves (19-for-32) and took a 47-19 advantage to the break.

Zione White connected on a three-pointer on HPU's first possession of the second half to trim the deficit to 47-22, but Daniel Horton answered with four straight points and Chris Hunter scored the next three to put the Wolverines up 54-25.

The Panthers went cold from the field midway through the second half and ended up scoreless from the field for a nine-minute stretch. A trey by Javier Palacios broke the streak with 5:54 left to pull HPU within 73-41.

Michigan was led in scoring by Horton, the reigning Big Ten freshman of the year (18 points). Dion Harris scored 14 points off the bench for the victorious Wolverines, who shot 57 percent for the game.

High Point got a team-high 11 points from White. Danny Gathings, Jerry EcheniqueJorsua Chambers and Palacios each had seven points, while Gathings, Chambers and Echenique tied for the team lead with five rebounds apiece.

The game was the first meeting between the schools, and the Panthers' first-ever game against a Big Ten opponent.

High Point faces Virginia Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville (2:00 pm) before two more road games next week at Western Carolina and Mount St. Mary's. All told, the Panthers will play their first seven games against NCAA Division I opponents away from home.
