Brita Nordgren scored in the 9th minute and Sara Pahl added an insurance goal in the 41st minute to help UNC Asheville win its first Big South game of the season, a 2-0 win over homestanding High Point Wednesday afternoon at Albion Millis Stadium.
The Bulldogs improve to 7-4-2 on the year (1-1-1 in Big South play), while the Panthers fall to 5-7-0 (3-2-0).
High Point has now dropped two straight League games after beginning Conference play a perfect 3-0.
HPU's best chance to score may have come in the 4th minute, when a header by Lena Svensson just missed and the rebound by Jen Evans hit the post.
Nordgren then scored what turned out to be the game-winner on a breakway in the 9th minute off a pass from teammate Kelsey Dawson. Her shot beat HPU keeper Katie Myers and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs' lead would have increased if not for the only HPU save of the game, a team save awarded to HPU defender Ryan Hays in the 23rd minute. Hays blocked a shot by Ashleigh Carter that was destined for an open net.
UNCA increased its lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute when Pahl's header found the net off an assist from Hilary McKay.
High Point's best second-half opportunity came in the 81st minute when Chelsi Parrado launched a shot that beat UNCA keeper Michelle Mattos, but defender Erin Trigonoplos headed the ball away from just outside the goal line to preserve Mattos' shutout.
Mattos made three saves in goal. High Point outshot UNCA, 12-10, including a 6-2 differential after halftime.
The Panthers visit Division I newcomer Longwood Saturday at 5:00 pm.
