Box Score In a battle of old rivals, Elon defeated High Point, 3-1, in volleyball action Tuesday night at the Millis Center. The linescore was 30-22, 30-25, 22-30, 30-23.
The Phoenix improve to 10-12 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 5-21.
High Point, which jumped out to an 11-5 advantage in game one, had beaten the Phoenix three of the last four times the teams had met. But Elon came roaring back and won 14 of the next 16 points to take a 19-13 advantage, and after HPU pulled within 20-19, the Phoenix won 10 of the final 12 points to take the opener 30-22.
The second game was nearly a repeat of the first, as Elon grabbed a 15-4 advantage before the Panthers clawed back within one at 23-22. But Elon pulled away behind
Brooke Pickard's eight kills in the game to claim a 30-25 decision.
High Point cut the lead in half with a 30-22 win in game three in which the Panthers never trailed. HPU had a .300 hitting percentage for the game, led by seven kills from reigning Big South Freshman of the Week
Lindsey Pickens.
In the decisive game four, Elon tallied a team hitting percentage of .316 and led from wire to wire, although the Panthers got within 23-21 before the Phoenix pulled away for the victory.
Pickard led Elon with 19 kills, while
Emily Hayes (16 kills) and
Juliena Gigon (11 kills, .348 hitting percentage) also reached double-figures offensively for the Phoenix. Defensively,
Mary Kate Spear (14 digs) and
Maria LaBrutto (13 digs) led the way, while
Kate Hart tallied 48 assists. Gigon added six total blocks.
For HPU, Pickens tallied 19 kills, 12 digs and four blocks for a double-double.
Kamarsha Ryan added nine kills.
Kim Anderson (11 digs) and
Jenelle Stouffer (10 digs) played solid defense, and
Heather Butt recorded 33 assists.
The Panthers hit the road Saturday to face Savannah State. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
