BLACKSBURG, Va. / WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The High Point University men's and women's track and field teams delivered a strong showing at the Virginia Tech Challenge and the College Last Chance meet. The Panthers had competitive performances across the sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws as the Panthers finished out the regular season before Big South Conference action.
In the women's events, Quiana Williams led the way in the sprints with a third-place finish in the 60-meter finals, clocking a 7.63. The Panthers added two more top finishes in the 200 meters, where Kendall Hicks placed third with a 24.77 time and Dae'Nitra Hester followed closely in fourth with a time of 25.09.
HPU continued its success in the hurdles, with Gianna Paul finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time 8.66 and teammate Gabrielle Crane placing seventh.
The jumps group produced one of the strongest event showings of the day. Paul returned to take second in the long jump with a mark of 5.82 meters, while Crane added a third-place finish at 5.69 meters.
In the throws, Ashlyn Giles placed fifth in the women's weight throw with a mark of 16.14 meters, followed by Jill Stroup in seventh with a personal best 15.86 meters. Giles also added a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 15.99 meters, while Vanessa Kobialka placed sixth to round out a productive day for the Panthers.
Wrapping up the day for the women at the College Last Chance meet, Mya Hines raced in the women's 60-meter hurdles and advanced to the finals placing sixth overall with a 9.54 time.
Moving on to the men's competition at the Virginia Tech Challenge, in the 60-meter hurdles, Dominiq Northington took home first place with an 8.16 time followed by Ethan Stallone in fourth place with a season-best 8.41 time.
The throws group delivered one of the most consistent performances of the meet. In the weight throw, Bradley Weiner placed third with a mark of 16.32 meters, followed by Caleb Barley in fourth at 15.64 meters and Prince Brockington in fifth with a throw of 15.41 meters. Barley returned later in the day to take second in the shot put with a strong mark of 17.72 meters.
In the pole vault, Jason Olivera Jr. finished fifth with a 5.34 meter clear, while teammate Grant Gogel cleared 5.19 meters.
At the College Last Chance meet, two Panthers had strong races in the men's 400m seeded event. Myles Darroch finished seventh with a 49.75 time while Allon Suggs Sweeney followed in 10th place with a personal best 50.02 time.
In the men's distance events, Jason Thomson competed in the mile and clocked a 4:10.91 time for 15th place.
