WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The High Point University men's and women's track and field teams traveled 20 minutes down the road to compete at the Wake Forest Invitational on Thursday and Friday, April 17-18. The Panthers broke multiple program records and took home multiple first-place titles over the two-days in Winston-Salem.
On Thursday evening, Danielle Jenson represented HPU in the women's 5000m race and placed eighth overall. The freshman clocked a 17:05.08 in her first outdoor 5000m race. In the women's javelin,
Kelly Chaballa had the best throw for the Panthers throwing 35.70m to place seventh. On the men's side, two High Point athletes placed fifth and sixth in the javelin as Drew Noblet threw 59.17m and Jake Gherardi threw 57.60m.
Friday kicked off with a full day of events as the first field event began at 9:00 a.m. Alex Hoffman broke the program record in the men's hammer throw after launching the hammer 60.07m on his third attempt. He placed fourth overall.
In the men's pole vault, Jackson Toumey jumped a season-best 5.18m to take first place overall.
Lily Houston and
Emily Romano represented HPU in the women's pole vault and placed sixth and eighth respectively. Houston cleared 3.92m and Romano cleared 3.77m.
Larissa Maxwell competed in the women's triple jump and placed third after jumping 11.06m. In the women's high jump,
Ashari Pearson matched her season-best jumping 1.66m to place third overall.
Rounding out the throwing events,
Elise Magaard placed 11
th throwing 12.02m in the women's shot put while Hoffman placed seventh throwing 15.91m in the men's.
Warming up the track,
Alyssa Hendrix opened the day with a huge personal best in the women's 3000m steeplechase. Her 10:18.94 time landed her a second-place finish. In the men's 3000m steeplechase, Aiden Morrison crossed the finish line in first place with a personal best of his own, clocking an 8:58.68 time. This was Morrison's fourth, first-place finish in the steeplechase this season.
In the men's 1500m race, Graham Ferguson placed fourth with a personal best, 3:43.43 time.
In the very next event on the track, HPU's
Ebba Ahman also placed fourth in the women's 110m hurdles registering a 14.13 time. Following Ahman's strong performance, Dominiq Northington and Antonio Votour got it done in the men's 110m hurdles, taking home first and second place respectively. Northington ran a 14.06 time while Votour ran a 14.42 time. Ahman later competed in the women's 400m hurdles and placed fourth with a 1:00.34 time.
On the men's side in the 400m hurdles, Allon Sweeney clocked a 55.54 time to finish the race in fifth place.
In the men's 400m, Tim Brown broke the High Point program record with a 46.77 time. He previously set the record at the Bob Davidson Team Challenge earlier this season.
Quiana Williams and
Dae'Nitra Hester crossed the finish line in the women's 200m separated by hundredths of seconds. Each recorded a 23.96 time crossing in fourth and fifth place respectively. For the men, Keshon Sapp and Northington dominated with first and second place finishing as Sapp recorded a 21.09 time and Northington recorded a 21.22 personal best time.
Nikki Frail earned her second consecutive first-place title in the women's 800m race after running a 2:07.48 time, just .44 seconds shy of matching her program record that she set at the VertKlasse Meeting. Camerin Williams followed up in the men's 800m and took home first-place with a new personal best, 1:48.97 time.
Brianna Malone broke the women's 1500m program record that had stood since 2005 by Jemissa Hess (4:20.79, Duke Invitational). She placed 16th after recording a 4:15.37 time which is the third best time in Big South history.
UP NEXT:
High Point will compete at the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. and the LR Open in Hickory, N.C. from Friday April 25 through Sunday April 27. On Sunday, a select group of student-athletes will compete at the Virginia High Performance for a single-day meet.
