Raleigh, N.C. / Austin, Texas / San Marcos, Texas – The High Point men's and women's track and field teams were spread across two states this past weekend. Athletes competed at the Raleigh Relays hosted by N.C. State, the Texas Relays hosted by Texas and the Bobcat Relays hosted by Texas State. All three meets began on Thursday and continued through Saturday evening.
Raleigh Relays
At the Raleigh Relays,
Chris Van Niekerk,
Timon Edelen,
Nick Morse, Letizia Marsico and
Amanda Scattergood represented HPU in the field events. Van Niekerk placed fourth in both the men's shot put and discus events, throwing 17.63 meters in the shot put and 53.31m in the discus. Edelen and Morse placed in the Top 15 in two events as Edelen threw 48.03m in the discus and Morse threw 16.50m in the men's shot put. Marsico finished 21st in the women's shot put throwing 13.23m and 13th in the women's discus throwing 44.15m. Scattergood threw a season best 39.71m in the women's discus.
In the running events, multiple distance runners competed in Raleigh.
Nikki Frail ran a season best in the women's 800m with a time of 2:11.29.
Charli Montalvo recorded a personal best in the women's 5000m race with a time of 16:50.22.
Katie Taylor capped off the night on Friday running in the women's 10000m race. She broke the program record with a time of 33:41.37.
Along with Taylor,
Othmane El Gharissi set a program record on Thursday in the men's 5000m with a time of 13:53.64.
Kyle Spencer also competed in the men's 5000m and recorded a personal best, 14:45.77.
Jake Tarosky was the lone Panther in the men's 3000m steeplechase and ran a season best 9:05.40.
Texas Relays
The highlight from the Texas Relays was
Deron Dudley finishing first in the men's 100m timed final. He clocked in at 10.13 with a 3.3 m/s wind.
Andrew Taylor also competed at the Texas Relays and set an outdoor program record in the men's high jump after clearing 2.11m. Taylor finished ninth in section B.
Lindsay Cooper competed in the women's 100m hurdles and recorded a time of 13.79 seconds to place 27th overall.
Bobcat Invitational
At the Bobcat Invitational,
Dae'Nitra Hester,
Karlea Duhon and Cooper each placed in the Top 10 in their respective events. Hester placed sixth overall in the women's 200m with a time of 54.65 seconds. Duhon threw 40.35m in the women's javelin throw section A to earn a spot in third place. Cooper competed in the women's 100m hurdles and ran a 13.87 to finish ninth overall.
On the men's side,
Shaun Thomas placed third in the men's high jump and cleared 2.06m.
