HIGH POINT, N.C. – On
Saturday, the High Point University women's basketball team will honor three of its seniors prior to tipping off against Longwood at 7 p.m. The three seniors are
Callie Scheier,
Claire Wyatt, and
Amaria McNear.
Scheier, a graduate student from Clemmons, N.C., has played all five years at High Point. She is a five-time Millis Scholar Athlete and she has been on the Big South All-Academic Team twice. Scheier was also listed to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll four times. This year, Scheier was named the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. On the court, she serves as a main weapon for the HPU offense. During her time as a Panther, she has played 127 games, scoring 813 points, 241 rebounds, 186 assists, and 137 steals entering Saturday's last regular season game. She suffered a season-ending injury last season which took her out for a few months. Since then, she has been back and has played in all but one game this season. Scheier was also part of the 2021 Big South Championship team.
"It has been so much fun watching Callie grow and mature over the years," HPU Head Coach
Chelsea Banbury said. "She has been one of the most competitive and hardest working players we have had. I'm proud of how she overcame her injury last year and is having her best season yet! She will definitely be missed."
Wyatt, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., has been a part of HPU since her freshman year in 2020-21. During her freshman season, Wyatt earned herself four Big South Freshman of the Week awards and was also named Big South Second Team All-Conference. She is a four-time Millis Scholar Athlete and is also the Social Media Chair for the Student Athelte Advisory Committee. Wyatt enters her last regular season game recording 721 points, 288 rebounds, and 97 assists in her career. She was also a part of the 2021 Big South Championship team.
"I hate to see Claire's senior year turn out like it did with some injuries, but I'm so proud of everything she has accomplished here," Banbury said. "For four years, she has stayed focused in the classroom to keep her goal of med school a reality and helped us win championships along the way. I'm excited to continue to hear about medical opportunities that she gets and one day see her on the sidelines as a team doctor."
McNear came to High Point as a freshman in 2019 from Kernersville, N.C. McNear was a four-time Millis Scholar Athlete during her time spent at HPU. On the court, she has solidified herself as an elite defender in the paint. This season, she had led the Big South all year in blocks. She averages 1.2 blocks per game. With one game left to play in her last dance with HPU; she has recorded a total of 190 points, 220 rebounds, and 76 blocks in her five-year career. McNear was also a part of the 2021 Big South Championship team.
"I am so proud to see Mari on the court this year," Banbury said. "She has fought and overcome so many injuries. Her resilience over the years has been inspiring. I can't believe this is her last year, but so glad she has been able to finish it on the court! I know she is ready for whatever life throws at her after all she has been through."
All three girls will be honored prior to the last regular season game tomorrow Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m. As HPU heads into the Big South Tournament as the No. 1 seed, Scheier, McNear, and Wyatt still have a few more games to play in the Purple and White.
