Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "It feels good to come in here and get this win. Our girls, especially Callie (Scheier) and Cydney (Johnson), stepped up today. We knew that this was a big game for us and there was a lot on it. If my math is right, we are at least guaranteed co-champs right now with the two-game lead on USC Upstate. They came in and showed up and did very well. We are fortunate we did enough and made plays to get a win. The lid came off the basket a little bit in the fourth quarter. Faith (Price) and Lauren (Bevis) had a few nice threes to top it off."
Cydney Johnson started the scoring off early in the first quarter for HPU. She scored the Panthers first eight points of the game. Johnson knocked down two three pointers and a made jump shot to give the Panthers an early 8-4 lead.
At the end of the first quarter, HPU held a 14-11 lead.
Amaria McNear got the team going in the second with a nice underhand shot in the paint to jump to a 16-11 lead.
Callie Scheier was feeling it from all points of the court. Halfway through the second quarter,
Shakira Baskerville found Scheier in the paint to grab the assist on a two-point jumper.
With one minute left in the half, Scheier came up huge and drained a three off a breakaway pass from
Bukky Akinsola to give HPU a 25-16 advantage.
HPU headed to the locker room up 25-18.
A little slow start to the third quarter had the Buccaneers slowly making their way back. With 5:15 left,
Lauren Bevis got her first basket of the afternoon to fall for three to extend the lead to nine.
The Panthers would go ahead and drain three three-pointers in a row after the Bevis made three. Scheier knocked one down from the top of the arc as would
Nakyah Terrell. HPU held a 39-31 lead with 1:30 left in the third quarter.
Heading into the fourth quarter, HPU was up 42-37.
High Point again would drain a few more threes to extend their lead even more. Bevis nailed her second three as
Faith Price also drained one from the corner to hit back-to-back three pointers to extend the lead to 11.
High Point held Charleston Southern to only five points in the last five minutes as the clock wound down to zero.
HPU picked up their eighth win in a row as they would go on to sweep Charleston Southern in the regular season.
Faith Price led the team in scoring with 13 points as Scheier was right behind her with 12.
Up Next: High Point will head to Rock Hill, S.C. to face off with Winthrop on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
