Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "I am happy with how we played in the third quarter. Unfortunately, we had a slow start to the game again. We have to figure something out there. We put them on the free-throw line too many times, and just did not really have any intensity on defense in the first half. But our girls responded well as they came out in the third and were ready to play. They made some plays on defense, and then did a much better job of defending without fouling… Faith [Price] knocked down a big three to get us going, us being 0-12 in the first half, so we made plays down the stretch and got another road win.
Â
The Longwood Lancers started the game off on a 6-0 run until a Bevis jumper earned HPU its first basket of the game three minutes into action.
Â
The Lancers controlled most of the first quarter as they led at the end of the first ten minutes, 18-12.
Â
Longwood kicked off the second quarter on a 8-4 run, extending their lead to 12, 26-14.
Â
The second quarter, just like the first, was all Longwood as the Lancers led at the end of the first half, 35-24.
Â
The Panthers struggled to shoot the ball the entire first half as they shot 9-31 from the court overall and 0-12 from the three-point line.
Â
However, High Point came out to play in the second half as they started the quarter off on a 10-0 run which included
Faith Price nailing HPU's first three-pointer of the game.
Â
HPU took its first lead of the game with 5:44 remaining in the third quarter, 38-37, thanks to a
Shakira Baskerville jumper.
Â
"I am happy with how they came out. I am proud of them that they got that lead down in 2:30 minutes in the third quarter. They came out with the intensity and they made plays so it is nice to see them come together in that situation," said Banbury.
Â
The third quarter was all Bevis though as she single handedly outscored Longwood, 10-6, and helped the Panthers outscore the Lancers 23-6 to give HPU the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 47-41.
Â
HPU had its best shooting performance in the third quarter as they shot 10-15 from the court overall and 3-6 from the three-point line.
Â
Defensively, the Panthers forced four turnovers, and held the Lancers to six points on 3-13 shooting from the court overall in the third quarter.
Â
Navaeh Zavala kicked off the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to give HPU a five-point lead, 50-45.
Â
The two teams traded back-and-forth baskets to start the fourth quarter before Bevis' hot hand continued as she drained back-to-back three pointers to extend HPU's lead to its largest of the game, 13, 60-47.
Â
Bevis' hot hand and Zavala's seven fourth-quarter points helped seal the game and put Longwood away, 64-53.
Â
Bevis finished the game with 22 points (18 in the second half), and Baskerville contributed 11 off the bench.
Â
The Panthers forced Longwood to turn the ball over 22 times, and a 9-26 shooting performance in the second half.
Â
HPU's comeback and win helped push the Panthers to over .500 on the season, and a two-game winning streak.
