BLACKSBURG, Va. — The High Point University women's cross country team scored a second-place finish in the Panthers' first 6K race Friday night at the Virginia Tech Alumni Meet. HPU was runner-up to host Virginia Tech as seven schools competed.

"I thought the women did exceptionally well with the challenge of racing at our distance, which is 6,000 meters," HPU Women's Cross Country Head Coach Remy Tamer said. "Also having three of our top seven out of the race, it offered opportunities for some to step up into a very important role and for our top end that did race today, they showed that they are here to stay. Their training and preparation, both physical and mental, has led them to a pretty strong mid-season place. With where we are now, we have some pretty crucial weeks ahead, so this is a good data point; however, I think the ladies understand and I definitely do, that what lies ahead in the next three to four weeks is going to be very serious work. It's all business. But the women today showed that they're ready for it."

It was the second straight second-place finish for the Panthers. And once again, the leader of the pack was none other than Brianna Malone, placing third following two Virginia Tech runners. The freshman crossed the finish line at 21:48.5 in her first collegiate 6K. Rounding out the top-10 for the Panthers was graduate student Katie Taylor, who landed in 10th with a time of 22:15.3.

Paris Stankewich was only one runner behind Taylor, finishing in 12th with a time of 22:29.1. Freshman Elizabeth Ritter was next for High Point, running a time of 22:37.3 and finishing in 17th place. Rounding out the top-25 was Charli Montalvo, who finished with a time of 23:19.0

Shauna Skow and Jill Thorning finished the race together in 32nd and 33rd, respectively. Skow clocked a time of 23:54.6, while Thorning finished with a time of 23:55.1. Sophomore Mikayla Moxley finished 41st for the Panthers, crossing the line at 24:17.8. Audrey Houle rounded out the top-50, finishing with a time of 24:41.4. Lauren Vossen finished not long after Houle, clocking a time of 24:54.9, good for 55th place.

Up Next: The Panthers travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday, Sept. 29.
