BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Tessa Carlin netted her third goal in two games as the High Point University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 Big South Conference draw with Gardner-Webb University Wednesday night.
SITE: Greene-Harbison Field
SCORE: High Point 1, Gardner-Webb 1
RECORDS: High Point (5-4-7, 3-1-3), Gardner-Webb (3-10-2, 1-4-1)
Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "In the first half, we were very flat and didn't get into the game. Second half, we looked much better, but we have to be more productive in front of the goal with the opportunities we've had. They scored on a counterattack and we have to position ourselves better in those situations. Next game, we have to go into the game with the focus on scoring early on our chances and putting the game away early."
Coming off the bench, Carlin has provided a spark with back-to-back games featuring goals. The score Wednesday broke a scoreless match in the 59th minute as the graduate transfer received the ball — via assists from
Emily Mashinski and
Megan Garmey — and dribbled up and past the goalie for an empty netter. It was her team-leading fifth goal.
The Panthers were on the brink of a goal for some time, outshooting the Runnin' Bulldogs 6-1 in the first half before doubling it with a 13-6 advantage in the final 45 minutes. Six of those shots were on goal while GWU had just three on goal.
Seven minutes after Carlin put her team ahead, the Runnin' Bulldogs had a response as Tijana Josic deposited the equalizer. Over the final 26 minutes, the Panthers had more chances than the home team but were unable to convert.
GWU keeper Jaime Martin corralled five saves to
Ellyn Casto's two. Carlin led the Panthers in shots as three of her five were on goal.
Up Next: The Panthers close out the regular season with a match at UNC Asheville on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m.
