Head coach
Joey Hammond: "Another one of those games that gets away from us there in the middle.
Parker Dean did an awesome job, gave us every opportunity that we could ever ask from starting pitcher to be in the game and have an opportunity to win. I felt like we got some big hits and some big situations early on, but really couldn't stack some there at the end and it got away from us. You tip your hat those guys, they got the pitches to hit and they put good swings on it. And credit to them for taking advantage of that and doing damage. We just couldn't really get traction, we really couldn't get length after that. But really good to see
Connor Smith get on the mound for the first time and show some flashes of some good things out there. Also really good to see
Griffyn Shelton throw the ball really well towards the end as well. But quick turnaround, that's the good thing, that we need to come out here and kind of shore some things up so that we're in a better spot this coming weekend."
The Panthers were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the second as
Blake Sutton doubled down the right field line to score
Josh Deslauriers.
Peyton Carr followed with a single up the middle to score
Justin Wilkins and Sutton to give HPU the early 2-0 advantage.
Both teams stayed quiet through the fourth inning, as
Parker Dean recorded five strikeouts, including two in the fourth frame.
Sam Zayicek highlighted the defense of the inning, as he threw out a batter attempting to take second base on a ball that was hit off the wall in right field, giving HPU it's second out before Dean's strikeout to end the inning.Â
But Pittsburgh started to rally in the fifth, putting up seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs. The visitors added two more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Using two more home runs and a double, Pitt plated six more runs to lead 15-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.Â
In the bottom of the eighth, High Point drew three consecutive walks to load the bases before Carr was walked and added a run to the HPU cause. On
Cole Singsank's sacrifice fly to right field,
Cameron Irvine scored to give HPU it's fifth run of the night.
Up Next: High Point travels to Lexington, Kentucky, for their weekend series as the Wildcats will play host for a doubleheader on Friday (12 p.m. and 4 p.m.) before finishing out the series on Sunday for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's contest was moved to Friday afternoon due to forecasted inclement weather. All games will be broadcast on SECN+.
