The High Point University baseball team (8-9, 6-5 Big South) has its last home series until May this weekend as the Panthers host Gardner-Webb (4-9, 3-4 Big South). The teams will meet Friday (March 26) at 4 p.m. before playing a doubleheader on Saturday (March 27), starting at 1 p.m.

Matchup History
  • High Point and Gardner-Webb have met 36 times before, with the Panthers holding a 19-17 advantage in the series.
  • Each team is better on the road than at home against each other, with GWU leading the series 9-7 at Williard Stadium and HPU holding a 9-6 lead in Boiling Springs.
  • The most recent matchup took place in the Big South Conference Tournament in 2019, where High Point eliminated Gardner-Webb from the tournament with a 6-2 victory.

Across the Diamond
  • Gardner Webb is 4-9 on the season and 3-4 in conference play.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs are coming off a midweek conference win against UNC Asheville after losing two out of three with Charleston Southern
  • Gardner-Webb steals the most bases per game in the Big South at 1.38, good for 58th in the nation.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs are also third in the conference in home runs, with nine total.
  • Mason Miller is fourth in the conference in strikeouts on the season, totaling 30 strikeouts in 25.2 innings of work.
  • Miller also has a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio this season and leads the team among qualifying pitchers with a 3.16 ERA.
  • Bo Rusher is the only Runnin' Bulldog batting over .300 at .310 while Mitch McLendon leads Gardner-Webb's offense with 16 hits.
  • Keiji Parkhurst is tied for second on the team with 13 hits but leads GWU with 11 RBIs and a .540 slugging percentage.

Panther Notes
Last Time Out
High Point won its second midweek game of the season with a 9-4 victory over Campbell on Tuesday. David Keith made his second career start and Parker Dean picked up his second save of the season. Joe Johnson and Adam Stuart each sent a ball over the fence in the win to lead the offense.

Start Me Up
Graduate student Grey Lyttle was named the Big South's Starting Pitcher of the Week earlier in the week after winning the head-to-head matchup between two of the conference's best hurlers last Friday against USC Upstate.

Not so Lyttle
Lyttle finds himself atop the Big South in total strikeouts after five starts with 40 on the season, including a season-high nine against Asheville. He's racked up the 40 Ks and issued only seven walks for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.71, the third-best in the conference while his 40 strikeouts are the 26th-most in the country.

Turning Two
HPU has turned 14 double plays on the year to lead the conference and sit 31st nationally.

Seeing Double
High Point is fourth in the Big South in doubles hit this season, with 29 two-bag knocks this year. It was a big week for extra-base hits last week, with the Panthers hitting two in all four games against Longwood and Upstate, making it nine straight games with a double for HPU and seven of the nine with multiple doubles. Additionally, the Purple and White have picked up an extra-base hit in every game except for the season opener this year, slugging .374 as a team.

Hopping on the Cole Train
Redshirt freshman Cole Singsank had a hit in each of the first two games of the Upstate series to extend his hitting streak to a career-best seven games before losing it in the series finale. He totaled 12 hits in the seven games with five doubles and four RBIs.

Carrving them Up
Freshman Peyton Carr went yard twice in the first game of the doubleheader against Radford, including a three-run shot for the first four-RBI game of his career. He currently has five multi-hit games on the season, tied for the most on the team, while also sitting second on the team lead in home runs with three entering Friday. While Carr only picked up one hit in three games last week, he drew three walks in the two games he didn't get a hit in, extending his on-base streak to 13 straight games - all but the first two he played in.

Home Run Parade
The Panthers held a home run parade in the first game of the doubleheader against UNC Asheville, trotting around to home four times in the contest after not hitting one heading into the weekend. It's the most homers High Point has hit in a single game since mashing five out of the park at Gardner-Webb on April 14, 2018.

Deja Vu
Brady Pearre had two of the home runs in that game against Asheville, becoming the first member of the Purple and White to hit multiple home runs in the same game since….Pearre hit two on….March 6, 2020, exactly one year to the day that he did it against Asheville.

WHIP it Real Good
HPU is second in the Big South and 56th in the country in WHIP entering Friday, allowing 1.29 walks and hits each inning pitched, second only to USC Upstate.

Getting Offensive
High Point put up 31 runs in the three games against UNC Asheville for the most runs in a weekend series in program history since scoring 32 on Presbyterian in a sweep of the Blue Hose in 2015.

Went Streaking
Johnson's career-long hitting streak finally came to a close in the final game against Asheville. He was unable to record a hit in his four at bats, stopping the streak at eight games this season and 15 in a row dating back to Feb. 25, 2020.

Short-Outing Save
While Johnson's hitting streak may have come to an end on Sunday, he made his pitching debut this season in the game, coming in from left field to get the final out of the game. He needed only two pitches to induce the groundout to short to secure the sweep and pick up his second career save.

Limiting the Hitting
The Panthers only give up 7.20 hits per nine innings, the second-best mark in the Big South and 26th-best in the nation. High Point has held opponents to five or fewer hits four times and has only allowed double digits three times.

Making the Sacrifice
High Point has hit nine sacrifice flies this season, the fourth-most in the Big South and 54th-most in the country. Individually, Singsank has hit two, fifth in the conference and 80th in the country.

Up Next: High Point hits the road for the second time this season with a three-game series at Charleston Southern next week. Game one is scheduled for Thursday (April 1), with a doubleheader slated for Friday (April 2).
