GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The High Point University women's golf team got its first taste of match play action this past weekend (Feb. 27-28) at the Aggie Spring Invitational. High Point took third place in the event with a 1-2 record, getting its lone win over host North Carolina A&T.
Â
"Certainly not the results we hoped for or even expected, but the experience the team got from seeing this format is going to be invaluable as we get closer to the postseason," head coach
Alexis Bennett said of her team's introduction to the new format. "Between playing as one group in Georgia and now match play, this week was all about 'team golf' which brought us even closer as a group and will be incredibly helpful as we continue to knock off some competitive rust and hone our games."
Â
This was an important event for the Purple and White as it allowed HPU to experience what a match play event will be like before potentially competing in match play competition at the Big South Championships later in the spring.
Â
Sarah Kahn and
Samantha Vodry led the way for the Panthers with a pair of 3-0 performances and never trailed in all three matchups on the weekend. Kahn took down the CMU golfer 3&2 on Saturday (Feb. 27) before a big win at 9&8 later in the day against North Carolina A&T. She capped off the weekend with a victory in 19 holes over her opponent from Appalachian State. Vodry won 2UP against the Chippewas to start the weekend and then cruised to victories of 6&4 and 5&3 over North Carolina A&T and App State, respectively.
Â
"Samantha and Sarah were outstanding for us yet again," Bennett had to say of her top players. "Each of them going undefeated on the weekend is a testament to their maturity as players and their ability to finish strong, regardless of the situation I'm very excited for what's to come for them both!"
Â
High Point's other two victories over the weekend came from
Olivia John and
Danielle Suh against North Carolina A&T. John won her match against the Aggies 4&2 while Suh closed her's out late for the 2&1 win. Suh had a tight one against the Mountaineers to decide the final match, playing all the way until the 22nd hole, where she eventually lost.
The Panthers are back in action in Wilmington early next week for the River Landing Classic on March 8-9.
