High Point University men's basketball heads back to the Schar Center for a second consecutive season against in state foe Elon on Saturday (Dec. 4) at 7:00 PM. It is the third straight season HPU has faced the Phoenix.
Across the Bench
The Phoenix are 2-6 on the year falling to UNCG their last time out 74-61. Sophomore Darius Burford led Elon in scoring against the Spartans with 15 points while Hunter Woods and Torrence Watson each added 13 points.
Elon was picked to finish sixth on the CAA Preseason Poll. Hunter Mcintosh earned CAA first team honors while Jerald Gillens-Butler earned preseason CAA Honorable Mention.
The Phoenix are coached by Mike Schrage who is in his third season.
Last Time Out
HPU fell in double overtime to Furman 74-70 in an incredibly tight basketball game in which neither team ever led by double digits. It was the first double-overtime game of the season and the second game this year in which the Panthers have played an extra session.
John-Michael Wright led the Panthers with 26 points, to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Wright was joined in double figures by
Zack Austin who had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 blocks.
Emmanuel Izunabor also chipped in 11 points and 4 rebounds. Austin's 6 blocks tonight increased him to 24 on the season, which puts him in a tie for 8th overall in the NCAA.
Honoring JMW
JMW was honored prior to the Furman game for his achievement of surpassing 1000 points. Wright is currently ninth all time in HPU scoring history with 1051 points after scoring 26 last time out. He is 53 points away from becoming the 8th highest scorer in HPU history.
Panther Dunk Counter
HPU has 20 dunks on the season so far. The Panthers recorded two slams in the game against Furman with both coming from
Emmanuel Izunabor.
Non-Conference Play
High Point will play 14 non-conference games in total, nine of them taking place inside the beautiful Qubein Center in its inaugural season and the other five occurring on the road. Four of the Panthers' five opponents on the road are Power-Five teams.
