On this day 10 years ago, the High Point University baseball team set a program record with five double plays in a 7-4 victory over Presbyterian. The Panthers turned two in four of the first five innings of the game and capped the game off with one in the eighth. Shortstop Mike Mercurio was involved in all five double plays, starting things off with the ever-common 6-3-6 DP to end the first. Mercurio then caught a liner and flipped over to Murray White at second to end the second and started a 6-4-3 double play for the first two outs in the third. Mercurio was the second leg in the final two double plays of the game, connecting once again with White for a pair of 6-4-3s in the fifth and eighth innings. The double play in the eighth inning ended the inning and came with the bases loaded and the winning run at the plate for PC, in an inning the Blue Hose had already put up three runs in.
