Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 6, Radford 2
Records: High Point (23-11, 8-3), Radford (16-15, 5-6)
Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Ty [Brachbill] was fantastic, it's exactly what we needed. He was in control from start to finish. I know we had an error in the last inning, but our defense was fantastic, turned a bunch of double plays. Anytime they got a guy on, we erased him with a double play. We had opportunities to drive the ball and Jake [McCarter] and Seojun [Oh] did just that. We also played some small ball, which was fun to see for us. Landen [Johnson] and Frank [Kelly] laying down bunts was key. Doing some baseball things, while pitching and playing defense is usually a good recipe. I'm proud of our guys. We now get a real opportunity for our program to come back tomorrow and win the series."
High Point jumped out to an early three-run lead in the first inning.
Lane Allen brought home
Willie Ponce on a sacrifice fly, and
Seojun Oh followed with a two-run home run, his 10th of the season, to put the Panthers ahead.
Radford got on the board in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to center field, cutting the lead to 3-1.
Jake McCarter responded with a two-run home run over the left-field wall to extend the lead to 5-1 after six innings.
The Highlanders added a run in the seventh on an RBI groundout, but HPU answered with a heads-up play on a first-and-third steal, as
Frank Kelly scored while
Landen Johnson drew the throw to second.
Brachbill delivered his second complete game in as many starts, going 9.0 innings while allowing just six hits and two runs, striking out five in a 6-2 win. He improves to 7-1 on the season.
Up Next: High Point returns for game three of the series tomorrow on ESPNU. First pitch is scheduled for 3:02 p.m.
